4 lawyers want job being vacated by judge-elect

Two committees of citizens and lawyers will begin screening candidates next month for Charleston County's master-in-equity.
Four attorneys have informally expressed interest in the post held by Roger Young, who was elected earlier this year to the circuit court to replace retiring Judge Victor Rawl.
The governor appoints masters-in-equity based on the recommendation from the local legislative delegation, said Delegation Chairman Rep. Chip Limehouse, R-Charleston. Lawmakers hope to make that nomination early next year, he said.
The master-in-equity, which serves a six-year term, oversees property disputes. Young has two years remaining on his term.
People who have said they're interested in the position are Mount Pleasant attorney John J. Dodds III, Charleston attorneys Mikell Scarborough and Christie Companion Varnado and Assistant Solicitor Michael Dupree.
"Judge Young has been an outstanding master-in-equity, and he has received very high marks from lawyers and citizens alike in Charleston County," Limehouse said. "We look forward to finding a very able and capable judge to fill his shoes."
Limehouse said two separate committees of citizens and lawyers would screen the candidates and by December give a report to the Judicial Merit Selection Committee. The committee will grade the candidates based on their qualifications and give a report to the local delegation, which will vote and recommend a candidate to the governor.
Rawl has said he plans to retire between January and June 2003. Young said that during that period, he would train his replacement and spend time on the bench with Rawl before he retires.
